| The
NiComp 380 submicron particle size analyzer uses
dynamic light scattering (DLS) to obtain particle size
distributions for samples with particles ranging from 1
nanometer to 5 microns. Through the use of
NiComp's proprietary analysis algorithm, the 380 is able
to analyze complex multi-modal distributions with the
highest resolution and reproducibility available.

In a liquid suspension of small particles, molecules
of the liquid strike the suspended particles at
random causing the particle to move with what is
called Brownian Motion. Smaller
particles move faster than larger particles.
When laser light is passed through the
suspension, some of the light is scattered
with a frequency related to the speed of the
particles. Smaller particles move faster so
they scatter light at a higher frequency. By
measuring and analyzing the scattered light over
time (dynamic light scattering), the particle size
distribution of the suspended particles can be
determined. |
